Biography of Izabella Miko

Born in what was still Communist Poland Izabella Miko could dance before she could walk. She began to pursue her dream career as a ballerina as soon as it was available to her at the age of 10. Izabella was accepted to the National Ballet School in Warsaw. She became so accomplished, so quickly, that at the age of 15 she was recruited to come to NY on full scholarship and study at the School of American Ballet. However, in 1997 her body could no longer withstand the rigors of a 7-day a week ballet-training schedule and gave in to vertebrae, knee and ankle injuries. In a blink, her career as a ballet dancer was over.

Izabella found herself 17 years old and wondering what career she would ever find that would emblaze her soul the same way dance did. It didn't take long for destiny to reveal its new and improved plan for her. While freshly back in Warsaw and recovering, a casting director asked if Izabella would play a part in a TV movie "Lithuania You're My Motherland". Once bitten by the acting bug, and never a lady to do anything only half way, shortly before her 18th birthday, she was headed back to America only this time, as an actor.

She immediately began training at The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and laying the groundwork for a successful career as an actor. Sewn instantly into the hearts of everyone she meets, it didn't take long before the business urged Izabella to become a bi-coastal performer. She came out to LA just after she turned 18 and from a short and magical series of events landed a much sought after role in Jerry Bruckheimer's “Coyote Ugly” (2000) playing the heartbreaker "Cammie". Izabella's role in the film put her on the fast track in Hollywood not to mention a slew of magazine covers and billboards as well!

Slew of films followed in years ahead, utilizing Izabella’s “all or nothing” attitude. "The Forsaken" (2001), "Bye-Bye Blackbird" (2006) where she plays a trapeze artist,"Save the Last Dance" (2006) to name a few. Izabella lives between Los Angeles and New York and is regularly in Europe for new movies. More info on her website www.izabellamiko.com.

Next movies to hit screens are "Dark Streets" ( http://darkstreetsmovie.com/ ) , which already won an award (Cine Vegas International Film Festival, Special Jury Prize) and "Repo"-by and with Ben Gourley and Jason Mewes. She can also be seen next in the movie "Fake Identity", where she stars opposite Val Kilmer.

Izabella has joined Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson in the remake of the movie "Clash of the Titans", which will be shot very soon in Europe.

Interview of Izabella Miko

Please find hereafter some excerpts of the interview (January 2009). For the full interview, please send an e-mail to info@mysimeonforever.ch.

IPS: How would Izabella describe Izabella ?

Izabella Miko: She’s a fidgety, overtly excited about life « Mother Teresa » type who won’t take « no » for an answer. Stubborn, emotional but tough, she can’t live without dance, love and a splash of risk in her life. Don’t try ....

IPS: The design of your beautiful website www.izabellamiko.com, is water related. What is your connection with water?

IM: I love water. It represents peace for me. It’s so infinite and the sound of it connects me to nature somehow. I’m also crazy about ...

IPS: On your website is written something like, Izabella has often issues with electronics. They can’t handle her Electric fields. The photographer was no more kidding about that, when his camera and his strobes became crazy during the shooting. Any other stories?

IM: It’s pretty crazy! Just the other day, I was at my American citizenship interview. (after 13 years in this country, I want to be able to vote and have some sort of a say if you know what I mean J). It’s a pretty big deal. I studied American History and Civics for weeks to pass. I sit down after swearing to tell the truth and only the truth and the officer is getting ready to pull up my file on the computer and the computer freezes! It does something and he tells me that ...

IPS: They offered to pay 100 camels for you in Tunisia! As we are having breakfast at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, there seems that the deal wasn’t settled. How much is Izabella worth?

IM: Well, you should ask my mom, she was the one negotiating! I know though that ...

IPS: They are again talking about strikes in Hollywood. This time the actors. What is your view on this as a European?

Because I work mainly in the US as an actress and I’m a big supporter of the Screen Actors Guild and unions in general I would have to say, let’s strike! The power is always in numbers. If we all stand united, we will win. The New Media is the big issue in the negotiations. It’s pretty complicated, but basically soon TV as we know it, won’t exist, it will all be streamed through the internet...which means ...

IPS: What changed in your life since Award winning movie "Coyote Ugly"?

IM: This movie opened a lot of doors for me initially and introduced me to the big world. At the same time, this was my first movie in America and I didn’t know how to find myself in the « dog-eat-dog » situations. The next couple of years taught me ...

IPS: We printed a synopsis of your new movie « Dark Streets » on the beginning of this interview. Could you please tell us more about this Film Noir and why you choose to participate at this project? (in European Theaters from this winter on) ?

IM: I love doing period pieces. I feel very comfortable in corsets and big dresses. Maybe, these are some memories from past lives? I love the world of music and dance, so this was ...

IPS: And as soon as this Spring we will see in theaters a movie called «Repo»  ? It’s a totally different style to « Dark Streets ». Could you please tell us more about your choice?

IM: It is very rare that I get to play a corky character. I was given an opportunity to pick one of the roles in « Repo » and while everyone thought I will go for the « love interest » character I chose to play ...

IPS: You are currently working with Val Kilmer on « Fake Identity » ? Could you please tell us more ?

IM: I play a spy who falls in love with an American doctor (Val Kilmer) who's mistaken for a secret agent. She must do everything to save his life without blowing her own cover. I got to wear a bunch of wigs, while disguising myself, so it was super fun. The biggest highlight was working with Val, who I consider to be ...

IPS: Yes I think that your fans would like to see you in a new action blockbuster. Any clue about which character you would like to play ? Lara Croft ? James Bond girl ?

IM: I can’t wait to kick some serious butt! I have the physical skills (don’t let the pale skin and the golden-locks fool you;-) and I would love to ...

IPS: You are constantly traveling between the US and Europe. Where is your life and where is your heart?

IM: I’ve accepted a long time ago that I’m a citizenship of the world and « home » is wherever I feel happy. Some people find peace in stability and knowing where their place is, I dwell in chaos and waking up all groggy on the plane with no clue from where or to where I’m going. It strangely feels exhilarating.

IPS: What are your Dreams for the future?

I love acting and hope that I will be part of films that will bring light to some important issues also maybe through producing. And in the years to come I would love to make a real difference in the world. I know that this sounds so pompous and vague, but I feel a certain responsibility to the earth and the world. That’s why I’ve created project EkoMiko ...
